About James Girvin
James Girvin is in-house counsel with the Ontario Provincial Police Association (‘OPPA’) and has been with the OPPA since 2010. Prior to joining the OPPA James was criminal defence counsel operating as a sole practitioner in Toronto. James earned his LLB at Osgoode Hall Law School after working at the Ontario Human Rights Commission as a Policy Analyst. In his capacity as a Policy Analyst, he worked with the team that wrote ‘Human Rights at Work’ a guide for employers and was the lead drafter of the Commission’s first policies ‘Sexual Orientation’ and ‘Gender Identity’. James also previously worked in the Ministry of the Attorney General Workplace Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Office as a Policy Analyst where he was involved in the rollout of the Workplace Discrimination Prevention program in the Ministry while also consulting and supporting management. James has previously volunteered in various capacities including as a server with the Law Society’s Feed the Hungry breakfast program, a Director with the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, Treasurer on the Board of Directors of Malton Neighbourhood Services, and President with the Malton Non-Profit Housing Corporation.
