PAO statement on the death of Tyre Nichols in the United States of America

The actions of the U.S. police officers that led to the death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee are deplorable and inexcusable. These actions are a blatant opposition to the core values and principles that Canadian policing is built on.

On behalf of our members, the Police Association of Ontario sends our condolences to Mr. Nichols’ loved ones and those who mourn his passing. And we join with people across Canada in expressing shock and horror over his senseless death and in calling for justice.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Nichols are inexcusable and tragic. When horrific incidents like this occur, it can shake the public’s overall perspective of law enforcement in the communities they serve. The policing profession must continue to forge relationships and be committed to the safety of the public.

As the official provincial representative body for over 28,000 sworn and civilian police personnel from 45 police associations across Ontario, our members share a commitment to keeping all Ontarians and all of our communities safe.
