I would like to nominate Hamilton Police Service’s Sandra Guiliani for the civilian On-Duty Difference Maker. Sandra is the person at work who brightens everyone's day. She comes to work with a positive attitude so strong that it's infectious. She has the impact of making everyone's day brighter. As a Special Constable, her pool of colleagues is large, and we all feel better when we work alongside her.
With the changes under the CSPA, Hamilton has revamped our Special Constables, expanding roles, duties and responsibilities in a very short amount of time. Sudden changes required our training branch to recruit the best to facilitate proper and accurate training. They needed a member who could research the necessary improvements and develop a new training method, all within a short window of time. Sandra was selected to join our training branch as an Instructor. She has since become a Use of Force Instructor through OPC. And we believe she may be the first Special Constable to achieve this.
Her presence at our training branch is felt by all members, sworn and civilian alike. We look forward to attending our annual “Block” week training as her positive personality and fun-loving nature makes the training exciting and full of laughter.
Outside of work, Sandra has independently organized the Court Security Hobble Golf Tournament for 15 years. This is no small undertaking with several logistic issues to coordinate, all done on her own time. This event has grown since its outset and is a highlight for many Special Constables and their families who put together teams for a fun day of competition. It is ultimately an opportunity for the team to meet outside of work, developing connections and creating memories. The event has become such a success that it is often attended by Crown attorneys, Judges, and retirees.
In 2022, one of our beloved Special Constables, Hannah Demik tragically died. This was devastating to the unit, it crushed morale, and made work difficult. Sandra rebranded the event to the Hannah Demik Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament now includes sentimental items to remember Hannah. When I attended the tournament, I was amazed at the hard work Sandra put into the event, and the impact it has on our members. This is something she has done for no praise and is a significant benefit to the members at the Hamilton Police Service.
I believe Sandra exceeds all expectations while on duty and is an excellent candidate for this award. She dedicates herself to make the community at Hamilton Police Service connected, and brighter.
