On Sunday May 11, 2025, at approximately 12:23 p.m. a life-threatening event unfolded during a recreational soccer match at 200 Acadia Drive in the City of Hamilton.
Amid the routine pace of the game, a player suddenly collapsed in the centre of the field, the victim of a sudden cardiac arrest. In that critical moment two off-duty first responders rushed to his side – Hamilton Police Constable Rory Gemmill and a member of the Hamilton Fire Department immediately recognized the severity of the situation and sprang into action without hesitation. Drawing upon their training, experience, and unwavering sense of duty, both men quickly began performing lifesaving measures, including CPR and other critical interventions, while bystanders contacted emergency services.
Their swift and decisive actions bought valuable time while paramedics arrived at the field. Emergency medical services were able to stabilize the player on scene and transport him to the Juravinski hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He is now in recovery and back on the sidelines cheering on his teammates.
Thanks to the courage, professionalism and rapid response of Constable Rory Gemmill and the Hamilton firefighter, what could have been a tragic loss was averted. Their heroism serves as a powerful reminder of the life-saving impact that first responders can have (even when they are off duty) as members of the community they so faithfully serve.
