In 2024, Nicolas was on his way to work from Burlington, not yet on duty. As he was driving on the Red Hill Valley Parkway, he noticed a man sitting on the edge of a railway bridge over the highway. Concerned that the individual was in distress and might attempt to jump, he immediately took action.

Nicolas exited the highway and made his way to the railway bridge, where he approached the man. Although he was not in uniform, he identified himself as a Hamilton officer. The man shared that he was experiencing significant mental health challenges that had led him to consider jumping. Nicolas engaged him in conversation, ultimately convincing him to come down from the edge. He then contacted his on-duty sergeant for further assistance.

His quick thinking and willingness to take the time to talk to someone in crisis helped save a life. He should be recognized for his efforts.
