Michael McCrackin - Kawartha Lakes Police Service

Award:
Year:
Service:

Michael McCrackin is an outstanding member of the Kawartha Lakes Police Service. Hired in April 2024 as an experienced officer, after serving as a Military Police Officer with the Canadian Armed Forces he brought his knowledge and experience with him and is one of the Kawartha Lakes Police Services very best and a role model to all our new officers.

On Saturday, May 31, 2025, at approximately 1805 hours, the Kawartha Lakes Police Service responded to an urgent call for assistance after a bystander witnessed a male jump from the Water Street bridge into the Scugog River. The bystander reported that the individual was floating downstream and could be heard calling for help. Constable McCrackin was among the first officers to arrive on scene. Without hesitation, he exited his cruiser and quickly grabbed water rescue equipment located in the back of his cruiser. In quick succession he entered the river in an effort to assist with the rescue of the distressed individual alongside his fellow officer. Despite being in full police gear and facing the cold waters and strong current of the Scugog River, Constable McCrackin swam toward the male and his fellow officer, who were being carried downstream.

Constable McCrackin was successful in reaching his partner and the male subject and with the assistance of officers on shore, the three men were pulled safely out of the water.

Constable McCracken's’ actions demonstrated exceptional courage and selflessness. By entering the river in full gear, he placed himself at significant personal risk, including the potential for hypothermia and drowning, in order to save a civilian in immediate danger and help his fellow officer already in the water.

His quick thinking, decisive action, and unwavering commitment to preserving life reflect the core values of the Kawartha Lakes Police Service and the principles of community-focused policing. Through his bravery and dedication, Constable McCrackin not only helped save a life but also reinforced the trust and confidence that the community places in its police service.

For these reasons, I respectfully submit this nomination for Constable Michael McCrackin for the On-Duty Difference Maker Award.
