I would like to nominate Kevin Singh & Jasjeet Parmar from the OPP.
This occurred approximately in October or November of 2024. I was driving on the highway on my way back to New Brunswick when I became extremely upset, confused, and disoriented. I didn’t know where I was, and all I could see were endless lights across the highway. I exited the highway, and in the darkness I saw a bright neon sign that said “OPP”, so I followed it to seek help.
I rang the buzzer at the station, and two officers came out to speak with me. It was very cold outside, so they brought me inside where it was warm and took the time to sit down and listen to me.
The officers recognized that I needed help and decided it would be best for me to go to the hospital to be evaluated. They went above and beyond in the care and compassion they showed me while helping me get there.
Some of the things they did that meant so much to me include:
- They conducted a pat-down in the most gentle and respectful way.
- Their presence was calm, kind, and reassuring, and they recognized that I was very frightened.
- They allowed me to keep my “safety whistle” with me, which made me feel more secure.
- They arranged for my car to be kept safely in the police impound lot.
- They personally drove me to the hospital in their police cruiser.
- They genuinely believed me and gently explained that, in order for the hospital to admit me, they would need to transport me in handcuffs. I have never been in trouble with the law before, so this was a very difficult experience for me. However, they remained incredibly kind and respectful throughout. I also have physical disabilities, and they carefully assisted me to the police car and helped me get inside, as I was in pain and unsteady on my feet.
- They spoke with me throughout the drive, offering reassurance, and helped me safely into the hospital when we arrived.
- They stayed with me in the emergency room for over an hour to make sure I was safe and being cared for.
- During that time, they spoke to me with kindness and reassurance, reminding me that I was safe and that they would not leave until they knew I was okay.
Their actions and professionalism went far above and beyond the call of duty. What they did for me that night was life-changing, and I truly consider them my heroes.
I will be forever grateful for their compassion and support during one of the most difficult moments of my life. I cannot thank them enough for being there when I needed help the most.
