Gloria Yu - Ontario Provincial Police

Year:
Service:

Over the past decade, Sergeant Gloria Yu has advanced recruitment, mentorship, inclusion, and professional development across the Ontario Provincial Police. She expands access to policing careers through targeted outreach, strengthens member development through structured mentoring and training, and builds community relationships through events that promote understanding and respectful engagement. These contributions enhance operational effectiveness and support a workplace grounded in respect and inclusion.

Sergeant Gloria Yu began her policing career as a Cadet in 2006 and was appointed a Provincial Constable in 2007, serving first in Essex County. In 2014, she became a West Region Uniform Recruiter in London, where she interviewed and mentored hundreds of Provincial Constable applicants, managed Ontario Provincial Police Uniform Recruitment social media, and delivered outreach that broadened access to policing careers—including virtual ride alongs, live chats, livestreamed mentoring sessions, and regional symposiums for students and non traditional applicants. Her leadership in recruitment was recognized with the Ginette Hince Memorial Award for Recruitment Excellence, and she was invited to speak at the Social Media Internet Law Enforcement Conference in California. She continues to recruit and mentor as a Recruitment Ambassador.

Her commitment to early career mentorship is long standing. After attending OPP Bound in 2006, Sergeant Gloria Yu returned as a mentor for nine years, supporting applicants from diverse backgrounds and sharing practical insight into policing. Promoted to Sergeant in 2018, Sergeant Gloria Yu supervised civilian call takers and dispatchers at the London Provincial Communication Centre. In 2021, she transferred to Eastern Ontario and now serves as a Platoon Sergeant at the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Detachment, where she mentors Provincial Constables and maintains a safe, inclusive work environment.

Sergeant Gloria Yu contributes to professional development across the organization as a facilitator in the Non Commissioned Officer Onboarding Experience, delivering sessions on the Diversity Careers Champion Program, Positive Space Training, French Language Services, and Regional Inclusion Councils. She also facilitates Positive Space Training to support members in understanding the history between police and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and in identifying respectful, inclusive policing practices. Her community focused leadership includes service on the Board of Directors of Serving with Pride. She helped organize the 2024 Serving with Pride Gala, which raised more than $10,000 for Camp fYrefly, Canada’s national leadership retreat for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. She organized Ontario Provincial Police participation in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Cornwall, creating opportunities for engagement and learning with Indigenous and First Nations communities.

Within the Ontario Provincial Police member support network Women Igniting Change, Sergeant Gloria Yu serves on the Executive Committee as Uniform Mentorship Lead. She provides mentorship, resources, and guidance to women and allies seeking career advancement. In 2024, she collaborated with women across Eastern Ontario to host a one day event marking 50 years of women in uniform in the Ontario Provincial Police. The event featured keynote speakers from Ottawa Police and Smiths Falls Police and a mentoring panel of officers and police professionals.

Sergeant Gloria Yu is also a member of the Advancing “WE” in Policing Ontario Working Group. In March 2025, the group hosted its fourth conference, “Integrating Voices: Fostering Allyship and Inclusion for Lasting Progress,” supported by the Ottawa Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. She contributed as both an organizer and a speaker during the intersectionality fireside chat.

Throughout her career, Sergeant Gloria Yu demonstrates leadership through concrete actions: targeted recruitment and long term mentoring; facilitation and training that build professional competence; structured support networks that assist colleagues; and community engagement that promotes understanding and respectful service. For sustained contributions to policing over the past decade, and for strengthening both the organization and the communities it serves, Sergeant Gloria Yu is deserving of recognition on the Police Hero Honour Roll.
