On January 20, 2026 SPC Whitelock #6175 and SPC Gainer #6126 were on foot patrol at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket. They recognized a male in the mall that was the outstanding suspect in a violent domestic incident from earlier in the day. They quickly communicated the male’s location and had officers start making their way. As they followed the male in the mall he became aware of their presence and exited in an effort to make an escape. Both officers were able to catch up and detain the male until officers arrived on scene. It was an extraordinary example of being cognizant of the various calls of the day and being alert while completing required tasks on shift. I was very impressed by the high level of awareness and professionalism exhibited by both SPC Whitelock and SPC Gainer in bringing a very violent male into custody. The male was charged with 15 counts in relation to an extremely violent Intimate Partner Violence investigation.
