Detective Constable Brenda Sarafin exemplifies what it truly means to serve — not only while wearing the badge, but in the quiet moments when no recognition is expected, and no obligation exists. Beyond her investigative duties with the Criminal Investigations Division, DC Sarafin has, over a prolonged period, demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the well-being of vulnerable members of our community, particularly seniors who would otherwise face the holidays alone.

In the fall of 2025, DC Sarafin identified an opportunity through the “Adopt a Resident for Christmas” program at Pioneer Manor. Recognizing that many residents have no family or visitors — especially during the holiday season — she took it upon herself, on her own time, to ensure they would not feel forgotten.

What began as a simple email invitation quickly became a meaningful initiative under her leadership. DC Sarafin coordinated participation across units, communicated directly with program staff, organized donations, and inspired colleagues to contribute. Through her efforts, funds were raised and thoughtful, personalized gifts were purchased for residents to open on Christmas morning.

Her motivation was never recognition. It was compassion.

Feedback from Pioneer Manor staff reflected the profound impact of her actions. Residents were moved to tears, expressing disbelief that someone would think of them. One resident smiled “ear to ear,” overwhelmed that a stranger would show such kindness. Another shared, “Santa really knew what I needed.” In a season that can magnify loneliness for seniors without family support, DC Sarafin helped restore a sense of dignity, connection, and belonging.

Importantly, this initiative reflects a broader pattern of service. DC Sarafin consistently demonstrates empathy and community-minded leadership beyond her assigned duties. She understands that policing is not only about enforcement — it is about humanity. Her actions reinforce trust in policing and reflect the absolute best of the profession.

The theme of “Senior Alone at Christmas” is more than a concept; it is a lived reality for many older adults. Through her sustained compassion and initiative, DC Sarafin has shown that even small acts of kindness can profoundly change someone’s world. She has reminded us of all that community safety also includes caring for those who are isolated and vulnerable.

Detective Constable Brenda Sarafin is a quiet leader who leads by example, guided by heart and purpose. Her dedication embodies the values of empathy, service, and community spirit. She is most deserving of recognition as a Police Services Hero of the Year – Community Role Model.
