Ben Keogan has been a Constable with Smiths Falls Police for just four months, yet he has already demonstrated exceptional dedication and heroism in his role as a front-line officer.
Early in his service, Ben responded to a critical call involving a youth in distress. Without hesitation, he rushed into the residence and quickly located the individual, using his seat belt cutter to free them from a rope that was restricting their breathing. His swift and decisive actions were instrumental in saving a life.
More recently, Ben played a key role in a dramatic ice water rescue, a moment that has gained widespread attention with over 1.6 million views on the department’s Facebook page. Assessing the situation with composure, he scaled a seven-foot cement wall onto an ice ledge, skillfully deploying water safety gear to assist the stranded youth. Understanding the risks, he ensured his own safety while executing the rescue, ultimately using fire rescue ropes to assist a firefighter and hoisting the youth to safety.
Ben has already proven himself to be an officer with remarkable courage, empathy, and leadership. His ability to remain calm under pressure, assess high-risk situations effectively, and act decisively highlights his outstanding potential in law enforcement.
