In the afternoon on May 17, 2025, Andrew Leng was off duty looking for a parking spot when he observed a male suspect throwing things out of a white bag on Concession St at the Juravinski Hospital. Another male appeared to be chasing him. Once the male caught up to the suspect a physical altercation started. Andrew quickly exited his vehicle to assist the male and stop the dispute. The male suspect turned and began assaulting Andrew by swinging a chain with a lock on it at his head. Andrew was struck in the head several times.
Ngonidzashe Machanya, a good Samaritan saw this and tried to intervene. The male produced a knife and stabbed Machanya in the back. The male continued to swing the lock and chain at Andrew striking him a couple more times. As the altercation continued, Andrew was stabbed in his left shoulder of his body. The male fled the scene as police arrived.
Patrol units flooded the area. The suspect was located and arrested a short distance away.
Andrew and Ngonidzashe were treated at the General Hospital and released. Both had stab wounds, bumps and bruises from the physical fight.
Andrew went above and beyond while off duty by risking personal injury to protect his community. Andrew saw a member of the public being assaulted and without hesitation, ran to assist. Thank you for your dedication to the community.
