On August 23, 2025, Cst. Benoit was on her lunch break when a radio broadcast reported an armed smash-and-grab robbery at a jewelry store inside Georgian Mall. Early information indicated multiple suspects armed with hammers and firearms. A witness had also provided a licence plate, which quickly revealed the suspect vehicle had been reported stolen out of the Greater Toronto Area.

As officers rushed toward the mall, Cst. Benoit made a critical and strategic decision — she drove in the opposite direction. Anticipating that the suspects would flee southbound toward the GTA, she positioned her cruiser along Highway 400, watching for the getaway vehicle to pass.

For several tense minutes, the radio fell silent as the suspects’ direction of travel remained unknown. Then, exactly as she had predicted, Cst. Benoit spotted the stolen vehicle moving slowly and attempting to blend in with heavy rush-hour traffic. She immediately broadcast the sighting to all responding units.

Navigating through multiple lanes of congested traffic, she skillfully positioned her cruiser behind the suspect vehicle, which was carrying five robbery suspects. When she activated her emergency lights, the vehicle accelerated abruptly, speeding along the shoulder in a dangerous attempt to evade capture. Maintaining tactical awareness and a safe distance, Cst. Benoit continued the pursuit as the suspects weaved through traffic, nearly colliding with other motorists.

The sustained pressure she applied forced the suspects to abandon their planned route and attempt an escape via Innisfil Beach Road. Travelling at a high rate of speed, the driver lost control and crashed into a construction pylon. All five suspects fled on foot.

By this time, additional officers had converged on the area. Working in coordination, police apprehended all five suspects without further incident. Firearms were recovered during the search incident to arrest.

Cst. Benoit’s foresight, decisive action, and tactical discipline were instrumental in the safe apprehension of multiple armed suspects, preventing further risk to the public and bringing a dangerous incident to a swift and controlled conclusion.
