Amanda Blackburn joined CKPS at the end of 2024 and, in a very short time, has had a profound impact on the health and wellness of our Service. Through her leadership, compassion, and consistent presence, she has helped create a culture where members feel supported, valued, and safe to reach out for help.
From the outset, Amanda has been available during times of crisis, providing immediate support to members and their families when it has been needed most. She has an exceptional ability to connect with people, meeting with them one-on-one, listening without judgment, and linking them to appropriate internal or community resources. For many, she has been the missing piece in ensuring they do not have to navigate personal or professional challenges alone.
She has played a key role in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health in policing by expanding access to in-house counselling, introducing emotional debriefs following critical incidents, and creating structured defusing sessions after difficult calls. These initiatives have created psychologically safe spaces where members feel supported and empowered to seek assistance.
Amanda provides individualized support to members experiencing workplace stress and mental health challenges and develops thoughtful, comprehensive reintegration plans that allow them to return to work in a safe and confident way. She has also provided guidance to employees returning from maternity and parental leave, ensuring they feel welcomed and valued as they transition back into the workplace.
Understanding the importance of early intervention and education, Amanda implemented a Wellness Day for new recruits, equipping them with practical tools to manage the demands of policing from the beginning of their careers. By involving Peer Support members and incorporating lived experience, she has helped build trust, resilience, and connection across the Service. Her in-service training for all members has further reinforced awareness of stress, burnout, and the importance of supporting one another.
As Chair of the Wellness Committee, Amanda has enhanced morale and engagement through initiatives such as wellness challenges, staff appreciation events, BBQs, and a Wellness Expo that connected members with community service providers.
The impact of her work is not only felt anecdotally but is also measurable, with a noticeable reduction in sick time among members. In addition, she successfully secured a $25,000 mental health grant and has focused on expanding and strengthening the Peer Support Team to ensure greater accessibility to care.
Amanda’s contributions go well beyond what would normally be expected in a new role. Through her vision, dedication, and genuine care for our members and their families, she has created meaningful and lasting change within CKPS. She is truly deserving of recognition for the difference she has made in the lives of those she serves
