Reintroduction of School Resource Officer Programs in Ontario

May 29, 2025

We are thrilled to support the introduction of the Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025. If passed, this legislation will enable the reintroduction of School Resource Officer (SRO) programs across Ontario, representing a significant achievement in our advocacy efforts.

SRO programs are essential for fostering trust, safety, and mentorship within our schools. Mandating these programs, provided by local police services, is a crucial step toward enhancing the safety and well-being of our children and youth.

Our members have long highlighted the importance of SROs, sharing personal experiences that demonstrate the positive impact these officers can have on students' lives. With this new legislation, communities will benefit from SRO programs on a larger scale, helping to create stronger, safer environments while inspiring the next generation of leaders.

We commend the Ontario government for recognizing the critical role SROs play in the education system. We eagerly anticipate the upcoming consultations that will detail the implementation process.

“The School Resource Officer (SRO) program plays a crucial role in fostering trust, safety, and mentorship within our schools. Having experienced the positive influence of an SRO in my own life, I understand how impactful these programs can be for young people. My SRO inspired me to pursue a career in law enforcement, and later, I had the honour of serving as an SRO myself.
The Ontario government's decision to support and mandate SRO programs where local police services offer them is a significant step towards building stronger, safer communities. The Police Association of Ontario fully endorses this initiative and looks forward to witnessing its positive effects in schools across the province.”
