A Milestone for Mental Health in Policing

Ontario Government Makes Significant Investment in Mental Health Supports for First Responders

Earlier today, the Ontario government announced an investment of more than $32 million to provide critical mental health resources tailored to the unique needs of public safety professionals, including police personnel, following advocacy by the Police Association of Ontario (PAO).

“This announcement is not just about funding; it’s about recognition,” said PAO President Mark Baxter during his remarks at the announcement. “We’ve all faced moments where the weight of the job felt overwhelming, whether responding to traumatic events or enduring the relentless pressures of service. This announcement by the provincial government helps ensure that we won’t have to face those challenges alone.”

Solicitor General Michael Kerzner and Associate Minister Michael Tibollo made the announcement at the PAO’s Fall Membership Meeting.

Following a rigorous selection process, Warrior Health has been awarded the contract to lead the implementation of the new Mental Health Supports for Public Safety Personnel program. Warrior Health, in partnership with esteemed organizations such as Wounded Warriors Canada, CAMH, and others, brings over 300 years of collective expertise in delivering specialized mental health services.  

The PAO and its members have long said Ontario’s police personnel must have access to adequate support and resources to help themselves, so they in turn can effectively help communities. This monumental step forward is not just a victory for mental health, but for all PAO members who have advocated for these changes over the years.
