The PAO’s 47 member associations across Ontario regularly organize and participate in local events to continue building positive relationships between the community and its uniform and civilian police personnel. The following are examples of local initiatives that our members have been involved in over the past year.

Waterloo Regional Police Association and CHYM 96.7’s Tara & Brady team up for the 2019 Random Acts of Christmas initiative

Thanks to the Waterloo Regional Police Association, CHYM 96.7’s Brady and Tara Show is able to spread some holiday cheer throughout Waterloo Region to some families that could use a little lift through the 2019 Random Acts of Christmas program. They’ll be surprising local families and brightening their Christmas with some unexpected holiday cheer – see and hear this year’s deliveries featured on the CHYM website.

PURE Joy for those who could use a hand this holiday season in Kingston

Kingston’s PURE Country 99 and the Kingston City Police Association want to spread joy this holiday season! Every week, Kingston PA and PURE Country will team up to pick a deserving nominee who could use a hand this year and surprise them with what they need, whether it’s help paying the bills, new winter tires, fixing a leaky roof, and more.

Random Acts of Christmas brings special gestures of kindness to Halton Region

Do you know someone who deserves to have their holiday wish come true? The Halton Regional Police Association and Hamilton’s Christmas station, 102.9 K-Lite, have teamed up to provide special gestures of kindness throughout Halton Region. The K-Lite Christmas Crew and the HRPA will visit five lucky nominees and give them a gift of good tidings valued at up to one thousand dollars!

Socktober success: London police collect socks for those in need

Thanks to a collection drive by the London Police Association, hundreds of Londoners will have toastier toes this winter. Throughout October, members of the London Police Service collected more than 1,800 pairs of socks for the Socktober campaign.

Rain doesn’t dampen smiles at Cornwall Kids and Cops fishing day

Smiles could be seen all around Marina 200 on Saturday, during the 17th-annual Cornwall Police Association Kids and Cops fishing event. “We organize this for the kids,” said Cornwall Police Service Det.-Const. Jamie Day. “It’s a way for us to show local kids that we too like to have fun. It’s to show that they shouldn’t worry about approaching us.”

Waterloo Regional Police Association teams with local radio station for Local Hero contest

Not every hero wears a cape. Heroic deeds don’t have to involve super strength or invisibility… although, that would be cool. Brady & Tara at CHYM FM along with the Waterloo Regional Police Association want to know about your own local heroes! People who make a difference every day in your life, your job, or your community.

Rob Plunkett Memorial Golf Classic - York Regional Police Association team

Event Date: August 2019

York Regional Police Association hosts Rob Plunkett Memorial Golf Classic

The 12th annual Rob Plunkett Memorial Golf Classic was held in memory of Detective Constable Robert Plunkett who was a member of York Regional Police for 22 years. Tragically, in 2007, Detective Constable Plunkett was killed in the line of duty while attempting to make an arrest in Markham. YRPA members have chosen to honour Rob’s memory, his passion for golf, and the Special Olympics by hosting a golf tournament in his name. Since 2007, the Annual Rob Plunkett Memorial Golf Classic has raised over $160,000 for Special Olympics Ontario.

Sudbury Police Association supports local hospice butterfly release fundraiser

Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury hosted its annual butterfly release at Science North in August, raising more than $28,500 toward costs associated with operation of the end-of-life care facility. This year’s fundraiser was a bit more successful than those in the past, said the director of the Sudbury Hospice Foundation, thanks in part to a $10,000 donation from the Sudbury Police Association. It is considered a very important event for people to celebrate the memory of their loved ones alongside their friends and family.

London Police Association collects school supplies for children in need

The London Police Association partnered with the London Police Service and the United Way to collect backpacks, lunch bags, calculators, pencil crayons and any other school supplies that Londoners are willing to spare. The school supply drive’s goal was to donate 450 backpacks to local Indigenous schools.

Brockville Police Association’s Cops Care for Kids program names 2019 recipient

The Brockville Police Association’s Cops Care for Kids program award is presented annually to a child and his or her family whom the police force determines is deserving of the award and could benefit from any extra help they can provide. Money is raised throughout the year through various police association fundraisers and with the support of Captain George’s Fish & Chips. This is the eighth year for the Cops Care for Kids program and it has helped families in a variety of ways in the past. The goal of the Cops Care for Kids program is to make life both easier and more enjoyable for the family, according to Const. Eric Ruigrok, president of the Brockville Police Association.

Dan Clewlow Memorial Softball Tournament members holding team jerseys

York Regional Police Association hosts Dan Clewlow Memorial Softball Tournament

The 4th annual Clewlow Memorial Softball tournament brought together York Regional Police Association members and the community for a great day of softball and outdoor fun in memory of Dan Clewlow, #1 District Officer who lost his fight to cancer on March 7, 2015. Dan was an avid baseball fan and was well on his way to a fulfilling career with York Regional Police when life threw him a curveball with his diagnosis of Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer).  In memory of Dan, this tournament helps to support the Aurora-King Baseball Association.

Cornwall Police Association supports local annual Hub for Beyond 21 Jail and Bail event

This event sees the Cornwall community submit their neighbours, co-workers and friends to be arrested. They are then brought to the Beyond 21 “jail” in a stripped shirt and handcuffs. The accused is arraigned by the “judge”, and the suspects are then sat down and expected to call family and friends to help them raise money for their “bail”. This year’s fundraiser went towards the Beyond 21 capital campaign to renovate their new home on Pitt St. The organization gives a home for adults with developmental disabilities. Cornwall Police Association President Sgt. Dave MacLean took the time on Wednesday morning to bring in one perpetrator himself.

York Regional Police Association members participate in Ontario Polar Plunge for Special Olympics

York Regional Police Association members participate in Ontario Polar Plunge for Special Olympics

This past February, the York Regional Police Association hosted a Polar Plunge event to raise money for Special Olympics. 108 brave souls took the plunge into the frigid water at the event, including York Regional Police Association’s uniformed and civilian members who were all smiles as they donned their Hawaiian beach luau gear and took to the water with Special Olympic athletes. The proceeds raised go towards providing year-round sports and competition for children and adults with intellectual abilities. Polar Plunge is a signature provincial event of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
