During the evening of June 2, 1951, Constable Frank Hare and Chief of Police Ivan Irwin were on patrol in the newly donated police truck donated by the local Lion's Club and were pursuing a vehicle when they crossed the level railway crossing and were struck broadsided by a train. The police truck was struck in the driver's door and rolled over coming to rest back on its wheels thirty feet away from the tracks. Constable Hare died from his injuries upon arrival at Norfolk General Hospital. Chief Irwin received minor injuries in the collision.
