While on patrol of the Orchard Beach area, 6 miles east of Hamilton, PC Shervill met a man lurking around the cottages. When challenged, the man opened fire and Officer Shervill was hit in the abdomen. The man fled. Officer Shervill managed to make his way back to the car and to drive as far as the highway where he gave the alarm. He died 7 days later as a result of injuries but managed to give an account of the shooting. October 1939, the killer was found and tried. He was sentenced to hang but the death penalty was commuted to life imprisonment.
