On July 11, 1977 Constable Kirkwood, along with his training officer, was assisting plain clothes officers in executing an arrest warrant. He positioned himself at the side of a shed in the rear yard of the residence to cover the rear exit. The suspect shot Constable Kirkwood from an upstairs window. The officer was struck in the head and killed instantly.
Fredrick Koepke was charged with murder and found not guilty by reason of insanity.
