Andrew Leng’s Story – Constable, Hamilton Police Service

In May 2016, my world came to an end. I ran out of rope. The adverse effects of 20 years’ worth of cumulative trauma from work and trying to mask feelings with alcohol. I couldn’t do it anymore.

On Mother’s Day that year, I had an emotional breakdown in front of my dad. I later came forward to my supervisor at work and said, “I need help”. I couldn’t do it any longer and finally realized that I wasn’t broken – I was injured.

I hope if there is anything that I can do to help another person not go down this road – I know my story doesn’t have to be similar to someone else’s.
